Methods Brief, October 2025

Young men are under-represented in mental health research and, as a result, the evidence-base that is used to inform policy, practice and service development may not fully reflect their needs and perspectives.  Men Minds therefore aimed to: enhance our understanding of the barriers that young men face in taking part in mental health research; gather young men’s perspectives on suitable mental health research methods; and document the learning from coproducing mental health research with young men.  This briefing highlights young men’s reflections on different aspects of the research process. It is intended to provide a quick reference guide to researchers, or others, who wish to engage with young men.  An in-depth reflection and case-study of the Men Minds coproduction approach and methodological learning are in preparation.

Policy Brief, May 2025

This briefing outlined why there was a need to focus on young men’s mental health. It summarised some of the key findings arising from the project, and proposed five policy recommendations for consideration. These were: improving our understanding of young men’s mental health experiences; ensuring a gendered approach to mental health education in schools which encourages boys to safely explore the interaction between masculinities and mental health; providing inclusive and informal spaces for young men to connect over mental health; reviewing the range and availability of mental health supports to ensure they meet the needs of boys and young men before they reach crisis point and; increasing the accessibility of mental health research by directly involving boys and young men in coproducing the research.
